Give Your Porch a New Look With Porch Columns

porche
Gen Wright asked:

Porch columns can dramatically change the overall appearance of your front porch. Perhaps that’s why more and more people are looking to install porch columns for their homes. Maybe you can consider doing the same. Porch columns come in various styles and designs. And that’s the first decision you have to make. Of course, you will have to keep in mind the overall look and feel of your entire home before coming to a final decision. Here are four common porch column designs.

Doric columns - These columns have parallel groves on both sides. They are simple looking, and have no separate bases. For this reason, they are also very easy to install compared with other designs. They are most commonly seen in Greece or Italy styled villas.

Ionic columns - These are also simple looking columns. The distinct feature is that these columns have scroll shaped ornaments at the top of the columns.

Corinthian style columns - Corinthian style columns are very popular. They are decorate by laurels, and the top bases have inverted bell shapes on them. In terms of design, these columns are the most complicated. But since the designs are rather intricate, they are also the most beautiful columns.

Romanesque style columns - These columns are square looking, and they rest on trapezium bases. They can be easily recognized from far.

To make your decision process easier, you can always check with your contractor and as for simulation drawings. The goal is to have some hint on how the overall look would feel like before coming to a final decision. Mostly, you will concern yourself with the bases of the columns, and whether you should go for round or square columns. You should then narrow down on the designs to see which are the ones that fit best. Decide early whether you would prefer a more complicated design or a simpler design. Bear in mind that in general, the more simple the columns, the easier it is to install. Still, the most important thing is that the columns help enhance the overall look of the house and thus add value.

Deciding on the materials.

Porch columns can be made from many different types of materials. Most materials, except for Glass-fibre Reinforced Gypsum Columns (which is meant for interiors only), can be used for both indoors and outdoors. Columns can be created from a variety of fibre glass materials as well as wood and concrete. The most popular choice is fibre glass composite columns, and these columns can be installed indoors or outdoors.

Another popular choice is Fiberglass Wound or Filament Wound Columns. These are lightweight columns that are suitable for both interior and exterior construction projects.

If you choose wood or concrete as your building materials, note that you will have to maintain the columns differently. For example, wood may be subjected to mold or rotting, but this does not apply to fibre glass. So you may wish to weigh the pros and cons before making your decision.

Porch Swings - A Sense Of Fashion That Refuses To Be Ignored

porche
Jesse Akre asked:

It’s at the cool of the day. The sun is beginning its setting stage, painting the sky from a bluish tint in the east to a crimson red in the west. The sky is sprinkled with small, cotton ball-like clouds, giving the impression that it had just recently been airbrushed. The sweetened iced tea is made and is, well, sweet, and ice cold. The favored radio station lowly plays in the background. The warm summer breeze caresses your skin while carrying the scent of your much-loved garden throughout the air around you. You and your loved one make it out onto the porch to take in all that is before the two of you. These are those precious moments life-long memories are made of, and only some can actually speak of. Holding hands, you rest yourselves on…the top stair?

For the bona fide romantic, the moment might not actually be from top to bottom ruined, but for those that feel they deserve nothing beneath perfection realize that nothing could possibly come closer to excellence than to be perching with your significant other on a well-manufactured porch swing. Many have ornamented their porches with every imaginable potted and hanging plant, window flower box, the fanciest of welcome mats, and still could not rise above the astonishment of how much improved a home could look with just the simplest putting in of a porch swing. The right porch swing can be a fundamental factor for that cherished evening, or just as important for those that desire a peaceful afternoon nap or a serene situate to glance at the daily newspaper.

Porch swings, since its introduction to the world of porches, have always been, and always will be that one minor addition to a home that guarantees a lifetime of joy and comfort ability set out to improve the look of one’s home, and create those special moments we all long to share with later generations. It has been the case for many homeowners, that a porch was added onto their homes entirely for the purpose of leisure and gratification. For the enrichment of their relaxation experience and delight, a porch swing was sought out.

For the homeowner with the traditional country-styled domicile, the classical country-styled porch swing is an ideal addition. Most are constructed entirely with the best wood made available, and can also be custom-made to match the fashion of your abode. Not an article of furniture to be type-cast, porch swings are also made with a steel structure, a supreme choice for those with the more contemporary type home. Porch swings have the potential of being stained or painted to suit one’s needs. Porch swings, from time to time indefinite, will prove to be that perfect home addition for that home owner with a sense of fashion that refuses to be ignored.

Wood Porch Swings Come in Many Varieties

porche
MJ Marks asked:

Porch swings come in a large variety of materials, including wood, wicker, wrought iron and man made poly resins. But today we are going to focus on wood porch swings. There are many types of wood in the world, and you can get a porch swing made out a a handful of these. Let’s take a look at what woods are available and some of the qualities that each one offers.

Cedar is a great, year round wood for outdoor purposes. You can find cedar in fencing and home siding, so it makes sense for porch swings as well. One thing about cedar that many people like and many do not, it is purely personal preference, is that it slowly and naturally turns a silver gray color, taking on a very rustic look. Cedar is very durable and strong without being overly heavy, so it is easy to move when needed. Cedar naturally does not warp like many other woods meaning that it does not need a lot of extra, protective maintenance and care. For outdoors, cedar is a great choice, it basically comes down to whether or not you like its weathered look.

Teak is another very popular choice in outdoor furniture. Teak porch swings are also very durable in all weather conditions. It has a tight grain and natural oil so that it resists rot. Like cedar, you do not have to finish it with a spar varnish, you can let it weather naturally. Unlike cedar’s gray, it turns a rich brown when exposed to air. Also, teak does not cause rust when in contact with metal. The down sides to teak is that it is expensive and, due to its dense nature, it is quite heavy.

Cypress, another wood known for its close grain and weather resistance to warping and shrinking, is known for its beauty. It is not used as much as cedar or teak, but is growing in popularity. It is heavier than cedar, but not as heavy as teak. Cypress can range in color from quite light to a rich golden brown, and it is also known to take an antique finish quite well.

Oak is a popular wood indoors, and can also be found in porch swings, but are definitely better used in weather protected areas. Oak is a hard wood that is quite heavy. Because of its open pores, it is affected by weather and needs to be protected with a weather resistant spar varnish.

I like the look of pine, but it is a soft wood that is better suited for the indoors. Many choose pine because it is more affordable than most any other wood, but it does not weather well. But porch swings are available in pine, so a spar varnish is a must, which should be regularly checked and maintained .

Regardless of the wood you choose for your swing, there are benefits of wood in general. Primarily that it does not hold the heat or the cold, so it is always comfortable to the touch. This is really nice because most other materials become hot during the summer and can deter users from enjoying a sunny afternoon relaxing outdoors. Also, any wood fits easily into the natural environment, regardless of the look and feel that you are trying to create.

So, consider the different qualities of the wood porch swings available, and choose one that suits your lifestyle and tastes best, you are bound to find one that you can enjoy for many years to com.

Teak Furniture - The Perfect Way To Furnish Your Deck, Porch, Or Patio

porche
Jesse Akre asked:

With summer starting to wrap up, you have decided to throw that last summer bash to hold everyone over until next year. To do it, you are going to need the ultimate place to entertain and that is why you need to purchase some fabulous teak furniture for your outdoor space.

Teak furniture is the best possible option for furnishing any deck, porch, or patio. Why? Well first off, it is because there are many relaxing selections available that allow you to build any kind of space that you want. Take that ultimate entertainment space for example. To achieve that kind of space, the first thing that you want to do is start with a nice spot for dining, a patio table and chairs set would do the trick. Then, you want to add some extra seating where people can just talk and relax with one another. Some nice deep seated selections would do the trick and do not forget about providing your guests with a place they can put their drinks, which is where some coffee and end tables would come into play. You are also going to need a place to serve drinks and a bar with some matching stools would be perfect for that. To bring everything together, all you have to do is add some nice final touches to the space and a few umbrellas and decorative planters are ideal for doing just that.

Now, you might be thinking that wow, those are a lot of teak furniture options and what’s surprising is that they are just a sampling of what is all available. Other selections include rocking chairs, porch swings, garden benches, and even bistro table and chairs sets. To check out the different choices, one fast and easy way is by hitting the Internet for some online shopping. You can click and find what you want without stepping foot outside your home.

Along with allowing you to create any outdoor space that you want, another reason why teak furniture is such a fantastic option for furnishing your space is because of the teak wood it is crafted out of. Teak is one of the most revered woods in the entire world for building things because it is an extremely dense hardwood that is not easily damaged. Its natural oils also makes it very resilient to the weather, so rain, sleet, hail, snow, even ice will not cause it to rot or break down in any way. Plus, along with being durable, teak is a beautiful wood that has a golden natural tone when new. Over time, it will fade to a sophisticated silver gray color. Both colors make for a breathtaking sight that make furniture crafted out of teak an ideal option for enhancing the look of your outdoor space.

So, if you want to throw the ultimate end of the summer bash, you need to have quality furniture in place and one of the best options around is teak furniture. Stylish, durable, and comfortable, it is an ideal choice for any deck, porch, or patio.
